The Consul General of Spain in Jerusalem, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem (the Bishop of the Catholics of the Holy Land) and myself accompanied hundreds of Gazans who were celebrating the blessing ceremony of the first stone of the new school of the Patriarchate in Gaza: the Holy Family School. While the project of a secular Palestinian state in which all minorities would have their place was still alive, Yasser Arafat himself had donated the land to build a school to the Catholic Church. At the same time, Spanish Development Cooperation understood the importance of investing in education in a place like Gaza, with a percentage of young people (currently 40% are under the age of 14), which is a huge asset for overcoming poverty. And he did so through the Fundaci\u00f3n Promoci\u00f3n Social, which had already undertaken another important project in Palestine to build housing for young Christian families, which had been inaugurated just a few days earlier. That June day in Gaza was a day of celebration that we celebrated to the sound of the lambada danced by young Palestinian girls in flamenco dresses&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But in September 2000, the second Intifada began, and over the following years there were blockades of the Strip, armed conflicts, bombings&#8230; which forced the Holy Family School to temporarily suspend its academic activity on several occasions to become a refuge for hundreds of people, becoming a point of reference for the protection of the community. And our Foundation was always there, supporting the reconstruction of the damage that inevitably and consequently its facilities suffered, trying to improve them as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>In the current war, up to 2,500 people have been housed within its walls. Entire families populate the classrooms in the hope of seeing an end to this unprecedented conflict. In October last year, shortly after the war began, the Remal neighbourhood was shelled by the Israeli army, and the school was again badly damaged. But what no one expected was the level of destruction of the bombing last Sunday, 7 July, in which 16 people sheltering in the school lost their lives.<\/p>\n<p>And one might ask: is it worth all the effort to build, even at the risk of seeing the fruit of so much effort destroyed? We answer emphatically: yes. Holy Family School has served the community for 24 years, so far, and has opened the door to hope for a better future through education for generations of Gazans. El C\u00f3nsul General de Espa\u00f1a en Jerusal\u00e9n, el Patriarca Latino de Jerusal\u00e9n (l\u00e9ase, el Obispo de los cat\u00f3licos de Tierra Santa) y yo misma acompa\u00f1\u00e1bamos a cientos de gazat\u00edes que estaban de fiesta, ya que se iba a celebrar la ceremonia de la bendici\u00f3n de la primera piedra de la nueva escuela del Patriarcado en Gaza: la Escuela de la Sagrada Familia. Cuando a\u00fan estaba vivo el proyecto de un Estado palestino laico en el que todas las minor\u00edas tuvieran su espacio, el propio Yaser Arafat hab\u00eda donado a la Iglesia cat\u00f3lica el terreno para construir una escuela. En paralelo la Cooperaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola comprendi\u00f3 la importancia de apostar por la educaci\u00f3n en un lugar como Gaza, con un porcentaje de poblaci\u00f3n joven (en la actualidad, el 40% es menor de 14 a\u00f1os) que constituye un grand\u00edsimo activo para salir de la pobreza. Y lo hizo a trav\u00e9s de la Fundaci\u00f3n Promoci\u00f3n Social, que ya<img class=\" wp-image-89070 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/promocionsocial.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Articulo-Gaza_MCS-4-1024x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"264\" \/> hab\u00eda acometido en Palestina otro importante proyecto de construcci\u00f3n de viviendas para familias cristianas j\u00f3venes, que se hab\u00edan inaugurado solo unos d\u00edas antes. Aquel d\u00eda de junio en Gaza era un d\u00eda de fiesta que celebramos al son de la lambada bailada por unas j\u00f3venes palestinas vestidas de flamenca...<\/p><p><img class=\" wp-image-89067 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/promocionsocial.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Articulo-Gaza_MCS-3-1024x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"264\" \/>Pero en septiembre de ese mismo 2000 comenz\u00f3 la segunda Intifada, y a lo largo de los siguientes a\u00f1os se sucedieron bloqueos a la Franja, conflictos b\u00e9licos, bombardeos... que obligaron en varias ocasiones a la Escuela de la Sagrada Familia a suspender temporalmente su actividad acad\u00e9mica para convertirse en refugio de cientos de personas, convirti\u00e9ndose en referente de protecci\u00f3n para la comunidad. Y nuestra Fundaci\u00f3n siempre estuvo ah\u00ed, apoyando en las reconstrucciones de los da\u00f1os que, inevitable y consecuentemente, han ido sufriendo sus instalaciones, tratando de mejorarlas en lo posible.<\/p><p><img class=\"wp-image-89079 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/promocionsocial.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Articulo-Gaza_MCS-7-1024x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"263\" \/>En la actual guerra, hasta 2.500 personas han llegado a albergarse entre sus muros. Familias enteras poblando las aulas con la esperanza de ver el fin de este conflicto sin precedentes. En octubre del a\u00f1o pasado, a poco de empezar la guerra, el barrio de Remal fue bombardeado por el Ej\u00e9rcito de Israel, y la escuela volvi\u00f3 a sufrir importantes desperfectos. Pero lo que nadie esperaba era el nivel de destrucci\u00f3n del bombardeo del pasado domingo, 7 de julio, en el que 16 personas refugiadas en la escuela perdieron la vida.<\/p><p>Y alguien puede preguntarse: \u00bfmerece la pena tanto esfuerzo por construir, a\u00fan con el riesgo de ver destruido el fruto de tanto esfuerzo? Respondemos rotundamente: s\u00ed. La Escuela de la Sagrada Familia ha dado servicio a la comunidad durante 24 a\u00f1os, de momento, y ha abierto a generaciones de gazat\u00edes la puerta a la esperanza de un futuro mejor a trav\u00e9s de la educaci\u00f3n.
