The FPSC project \u201cImprovement in the coverage of basic needs by providing housing, sanitation solutions, a drinking water network and environmental protection in the rural community of La Reina. Nicaragua\u201d <\/a>is a complex one, and it is co-funded by several actors: The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID)<\/strong>, Obra Social de Caja Madrid <\/strong>and the City of Madrid<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Last April 30th the co-funded activities finished. These activities were the following: <\/p>\n

\u2022 Building 23 latrines<\/strong>
\u2022 Building Water Systems <\/strong>(core network and initial distribution)
\u2022 Training workshops<\/strong> (Hygiene and System Preservation) <\/p>\n

These activities complement the project, which aims to improve life quality by giving a dignified place for living, that means with a roof, a private and clean bathroom and a water access, so they don\u2019t need to walk to the closest place to get it.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

They are mostly in scattered places, difficult to reach, so that is the reason why training workshops are so important. The project may bring a big investment on building and logistics, but this new model of living is offered as an opportunity for development.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

23 families, 7 members each, benefit from this project<\/strong>, so approximately 150 people are being helped. It is expected that this opportunity is one they can take advantage of, one that allows them to improve their life conditions.<\/p>\n

The main challenge for the future is the sustainability of the Drinking Water Network (which is connected through CAPS, Water Committees promoted by the Government of Nicaragua) and the latrines (with the cleaning preservation that families provide). The drinking water network is just a part of the total network that will be built and that will give supply specially to the El Naranjo Community.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

In addition, and thanks to the conduction of this project, a big amount of the information, including reception proceedings, contracts and different photographs, has been digitalized<\/strong>.
