The project of humanitarian action, “Health care program for the victims of war of Abobo and Danga Bas -Fond (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) neighorhoods”, funded by Comunity of Madrid, and implemented in partnership with the Association Pour Culturel Et Le Développement Social (ADESC) which, since its inception in 1984, has considered health and health education a priority especially in rural areas, ended during the month of October.
Currently, in addition to the negative consequences of the country’s war in 2002 , many areas of the capital are suffering the aftermath of the post-election crisis of 2010-2011 of the Abobo and Danga Basfond neighborhoods. Abobo has suffered the heaviest fighting resulting in a large number of war victims and also a mass migration to Danga Basfond, which has seen its population triple in size in no time. Because of this, there were several epidemics, populations facing subhuman living conditions, and a high level of mortality, especially among children and women.
In this context, health care in this region required emergency assistance and FPSC with its project, responded to this need by providing health care to the populations of Abobo and Danga Basfond with gynecology and prenatal diagnosis, care to adults and seniors, and pediatric care.
During 8 months of project implementation, 9 doctors, 6 nurses and 4 pharmacists, Monday through Friday, provided assistance to over 4,500 patients with proper medication and monitoring those who required a full recovery.
Also, this project sensitized the population on the prevention of childhood diseases, ensuring an appropriate development for this sector of the population on nutrition, hygiene, and AIDS.
All consultations and medicines were free, which, given the scarcity of financial resources and the remoteness of their existing health centers in this region, has been a great help for the people of Abidjan.
