Convenio: Building resilience to climate change by strengthening the livelihoods of Somali agro-pastoralist communities

The Convenio, developed in partnership with the NGO Rescate, aims to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability to extreme climate-related events and other economic, social, and environmental disasters that lead to the destruction of livelihoods, food insecurity, and gender inequality, with the goal of reducing poverty in the region.

The focus will be on the following areas:

  • Rural development, food security, and nutrition: Efforts will be made to support the restoration of livelihoods, contribute to self-sufficiency, and improve resilience. Specifically, this will involve strengthening the use and distribution of improved and diversified seeds, incorporating agricultural tools and equipment, installing irrigation systems, and enhancing the capacities of agricultural and pastoral communities to implement climate-smart and environmentally and economically sustainable practices.
  • Water (availability, safety, and accessibility): In addition to water issues in the region, the existing water and sanitation facilities are wholly inadequate. Therefore, in the Fafan area, efforts will focus on rehabilitating non-functional wells and constructing new water supply systems for both domestic and productive uses. Furthermore, the population’s capacities will be enhanced through training, awareness-raising, and institutional strengthening.
  • Environment and climate change: The population’s adaptive capacity and recovery skills will be developed to manage natural resources through actions such as disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, prevention of erosion and soil improvement, adoption of disaster prevention, rehabilitation, and response plans, rehabilitation of degraded communal and agricultural lands, and sustainable resource management.
  • Gender: Considering that the effects of climate change disproportionately impact women’s lives, particularly in their primary roles in food production and livelihoods, the Agreement will address gender equality both transversally and sectorally. It will contribute to empowering women in productive processes and decision-making and will establish a support, prevention, and monitoring network against gender-based violence in individual, social, and political spheres.
