Guatemala is a country with macroeconomic stability but marked by high levels of inequality and poverty, particularly in rural areas and among indigenous populations. Multidimensional poverty affects millions of people, with a high percentage working in the informal sector, highlighting the importance of the agricultural sector in the economy.
The country also faces significant challenges, leading Latin America in chronic malnutrition. Discrimination against indigenous populations contributes to alarming rates of malnutrition, particularly affecting children. The project aims to address this issue in six communities in the Quiché department, focusing on food security and environmental conditions.
The proposal focuses on supporting small-scale food production systems, promoting food security, nutrition, equity, and sustainability of natural resources. Theoretical and practical training, led by members of the K’iché ethnicity, will focus on culturally adapted agricultural practices and the production of nutritious food. Training local promoters will also contribute to improving food insecurity in these communities.
