Syrian and Jordanian refugees with disabilities receive full support in Mafraq, Jordan

This week, a technical team from the Social Promotion Foundation, headed by Alejandro Seco, our head of mission in Jordan, has carried out a field visit in Mafraq to supervise the activities of the project “Promoting the full exercise of rights of people with functional diversity and elderly people, Syrian and Jordanian refugees”.

This humanitarian aid initiative, funded by the Generalitat Valenciana, aims to improve the quality of life and access to health care for refugees in situations of extreme vulnerability, integrating an intersectional approach that considers functional diversity, age and gender violence.

In collaboration with local partner Al-Hussein Society, the Project has managed to implement a multidisciplinary response covering different areas:

  • Identification and individualized assessment of cases of functional diversity: an occupational therapist conducted detailed interviews with new potential beneficiaries, documenting their medical needs, the recommended therapeutic procedure and the necessary mobility aids
  • Delivery of customized mobility devices: In coordination with the Amman team, fully customized prostheses, orthoses, walkers and wheelchairs adapted for people with functional diversity were distributed, manufactured in the local partner’s workshop in Amman, taking into account the protection and safety of each of them. Each beneficiary received guidance on the maintenance of their equipment and evaluated the service received.
  • Rehabilitation and psychosocial support sessions: two physiotherapists from the project performed mobility exercises with the patients, including those with cerebral palsy, while the occupational therapist provided advice to the beneficiaries’ family members and caregivers in a specially designed space that guaranteed the privacy and intimacy of all the groups present.

This project seeks to strengthen the technical capacities of Al-Hussein Society, implement an identification and referral system based on Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID), and improve the mobility and autonomy of beneficiaries through adapted devices and rehabilitation.

Thanks to the efforts of local staff, who are trained in detecting abuse and caring for vulnerable people, nearly 600 people from the city and the refugee camps of Azraq, Ramtha and Mafraq/Kabsa have access to health services and personalized assistance, improving their quality of life and their autonomy.

The Social Promotion Foundation reaffirms its commitment to working alongside local partners to support the most vulnerable people and promote dignified humanitarian assistance tailored to the specific needs of each individual.
