Working for integration and the rights of persons with disabilities in the refugee camps of Za’atari and Azraq (Jordan)

Last Monday, February 20, the inauguration of the FPSC Safe Space in the Azraq refugee camp took place, with the first performance of the “Light Spot” inclusive theatre group, led by the refugees themselves, and Coordinated by the FPSC.

The event was attended by, among others personalities, Amani Saleh, regional head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Syria (OCHA) in Jordan -manager of the fund currently funding FPSC’s project-; Susan Mirbagheri, representative of UNHCR; by the Spanish Cooperation, Vicente Ortega Cámara, General Coordinator of the OTC, and Isidro García; and representatives of the Jordanian government of the SRAD (Directorate for Syrian Refugee Affairs).

There was theatre, dances and songs, during which it was advocated for the rights of people with disabilities and children. For example, Hamzeh, a six-year-old Syrian refugee child, sang an exciting song, full of strength and feeling, and interposing some stanza in English, repeated “we are just children, give us a chance.” Given his performance, the audience fell silent and moved.

As a colophon to the day, the attendees to the event could enjoy refreshment at the end of the performances.

The following day, February 21, at the Za’atari refugee camp the “Mark of Hope” theatre group performed at the IRD facility, since the FPSC clinic does not have the capacity to house a large number of attendees.

The theatre began with the representation of a group of children with disabilities, who through a puppet theatre, wanted to highlight in the mouth of puppets the importance on the conservation of nature. Next, a group of young people, through a series of monologues, spoke about the human rights of Syrian refugees. Finally, another group represented a symbolic and grateful work for the support that Jordan and the Jordanians are giving to Syria and the Syrians in these difficult times for the country.
