Youth MUN Madrid holds its annual conference

 

In the ‘new normal’ society needs more than ever young nonconformists, open to dialogue between cultures and capable of seeking joint solutions beyond their own borders

 

Youth MUN Madrid held its annual conference on 18-20 September, which was scheduled for last April and had to be postponed due to the state of alarm.

As it was held in person, this edition was totally adapted to the preventive measures of public health in the Community of Madrid in front of the COVID-19, for the safety of all the attendees: 50 young people of school age of different nationalities (Spanish, Iranian, Portuguese and Venezuelan). In addition, a group of young people from the Canary Islands participated virtually.

The inauguration was held in the Senate in Madrid, and afterwards the committee sessions, led by university students, took place over the weekend in the Los Tilos School in Madrid.

The Human Rights Commitee (UNHRC), chaired by Anabel Herranz and co-chaired by Pablo García Rodríguez and María García Velando, dealt with the issues of Prisoners’ rights and the condition of the prisons’ and `Youth and covid-19: Impacts on jobs, education, rights and mental well-being’.

United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), chaired by Helen Souki and co-chaired by Alvaro Aranda, has had as its themes ‘Ensuring safer and fairer workplaces for women’ and ‘COVID-19 and conflict: Advancing women’s meaningful participation in ceasefires and peace processes’.

Finally, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), chaired by Alejandro Sánchez and co-chaired by Pablo Gómez Saborit, addressed the themes of ‘Communication Satellites and space as a resource’ and ‘Digital learning solutions in the post-Covid-19 era’.
