Dedicate time to others: the best way to spend the summer for many young people from Madrid

For solidarity, there is no calendar, and summer is also a good time to dedicate time to others and help in causes of solidarity.

For this reason, the Foundation has made available to a group of young people, various volunteer programs during the months of July and August, so that they contribute and participate, in a generous, altruistic and solidary way, to try to improve the lives of people more vulnerable. This experience also helps them to value more what they have and to grow as people.

From June 23 to July 8, a group of young women students of 1st and 2nd year of high school and university made a volunteer program in KENYA, organized by Social Promotion and the Zurbarán Residence Hall.

Their solidarity activity was developed in Kibubuti Primary School, located in an area close to Kimlea.

For two weeks, the girls carried out rehabilitation work at the school: painting of classrooms and façades, cleaning and replacement of broken windows. The materials used for these improvements were acquired by the volunteers themselves, thanks to the donations raised through a successful fundraising campaign that they set in motion. In addition, this campaign generated a surplus that has been allocated to health grants: with € 50, a child from the school accesses the services of Kimlea’s medical clinic for 10 years. During the month of September, they have continued to raise funds for this purpose.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the property, the volunteers carried out school reinforcement tasks and the preparation of teaching materials, as well as leisure activities, crafts, and sports.

In the afternoons they visited the families of the tea plantations to bring them food and play with their children.

In GUATEMALA, thanks to the close collaboration between the local organization FUDI and Fundación Promoción Social, together with the university association Recoletos de Madrid, the possibility of organizing a volunteer program during the summer at the “Ixoqì” women’s care center arose (“Women” in the Kaqchikel language) in Tecpán. This activity also had the support of the REDI network.

Young professional and university women from Madrid, very committed, traveled from July 7 to 22 to Xenimajuyú, where they carried out school support work for primary and pre-primary children and teacher training.

As part of this volunteering program, work was also carried out to prepare the facilities and sanitary days.

Lastly, on July 2, in LEBANON, Fundación Promoción Social, through its specialized staff that works permanently in the settlements of refugee families, provided the Lebanese association ALDEC with the organization of a volunteer day for 25 young people university students at Amal School, in Zahle. The activity consisted of the development of games and sports activities with more than 120 refugee children in the nearby fields in the Bekaa Valley.
