On Tuesday, February 25, the Spanish ambassador to Lebanon, Jesús Santos Aguado, visited the activities of the new project we are implementing in Lebanon in collaboration with our local partner, René Moawad Foundation (RMF), and financially supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). The coordinator of the Spanish Cooperation Office (OCE) for Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, Cristina Gutiérrez Hernández, also participated in the visit.
Our Head of Mission in Lebanon, Delphine Compain, was also present at the meeting and had the opportunity to introduce the work of Social Promotion Foundation in Lebanon and, specifically, this project, which supports apple producers and their contribution to rural and economic development in northern Lebanon and Baalbek-Hermel.
Needs and challenges
During the visit, the apple producers showed some of the orchards where the project is being carried out. They also held a meeting with the ambassador and AECID representatives, where they discussed the challenges they face and their needs in carrying out their agricultural activities.
One of the biggest concerns they expressed is the current struggle of Lebanese apples to compete in local and global markets. Although they were once in high demand, the growing consumer preference for visually ‘perfect’ fruit, often overlooking taste, has led to a decline in support for locally grown products, despite their superior flavor.
Spain’s support
In this regard, the ambassador expressed his interest in the work carried out by these producers, recognizing that “Lebanese apples are among the best varieties available” and adding that he has also noticed their growing popularity among parents who choose healthier food options for their children.
Furthermore, Santos Aguado praised their work, stating that “it is always a pleasure to work closely with farmers who have a deep connection with their homeland.” For her part, the OCE director for Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria emphasized Spanish cooperation’s support for Lebanese farmers and landowners, helping them find the best solutions for sustaining their essential work.
